Feed your family on a budget | Competition | Ended

A recent article I read by News Limited stated that 1 in 3 Australians are going without meals to ensure their children are fed! I know I have had to cut back on things in order to buy food and be able to pay the bills. I hate the thought of Parent having to go hungry just to feed their children so we have been looking around for some thrifty ideas to help you all save money.Living thriftily isn’t easy when your used to not following a budget and it’s something I have had to work hard at myself since my husband started his own business.

In our search for thrifty, frugal living ideas, tips and advice we came across Feed Your Family. Good food and good times can be had on a very tight budget, it just takes a little know-how and chefs Cynthia and Alisa Mayne certainly know how.

According to the News Limited report One-third of people surveyed went without meals in the past year to ensure their family was fed as rising living costs forced cutbacks on bare essentials. Seventy-five per cent of more than 1000 people surveyed also said they had to cut back on buying food or cut some items out of their shopping lists altogether.

Staples such as meat, fruit and bread were among the most common items cut out. More than 60 per cent of people said they worried at least some of the time about not having enough money to feed their family.

Last week the Herald Sun reported that the jobless rate for Victorian women has soared to a near eight-year high of 6.1 per cent on the back of a surge of women entering the job market to cope with rising living costs.

The Bureau of Statistics said 22,000 women across the state joined the hunt for work last month, but only 14,200 found a job.

Are things tight at your house? Have you ever gone without just to make ends meat?

Thanks to Cynthia and Alisa we have a few books to give-away.

I have gone without a haircut for 10 years! I only just went to the hairdressers a few weeks ago and boy was the hairdresser shocked at all the hair that she trimmed off! My hair feels so much more managable now :)

I've gone without a lot of things lately - but I've also been taught about how much money I used to 'waste' on things I didn't need! Since my partner moved in (he has 2 boys who stay with us once a fortnight and holidays etc.) we have had to scrimp and save just to pay the bills which are usually paid late! Now I reach for the dirty potatoes at the store - even when he pointed out to me the other day that the clean ones were actually cheaper! Look at what he has done to me!!! :)

I've gone without maternity clothing, remedial massages,a hair cut and dye through out my entire pregnancy as my work hours were reduced to almost nothing and we had to make sure there was enough money for bills and food. We spent all school holidays at home or had very budget outings. I spent $1 on a loaf of bread for a duck feeding day and Miss 6 wrote about her day at IKEA when asked about her holidays.

I've gone without convenience I guess. Instead of driving to school, we now take out the 1/2 hour and ride. Instead of picking up a magazine at the checkout, I'm checking out back issues/books at the library. Instead of ditching old/alittle worn out clothes, I'm mending and making do. :)

We go without name brand food- just about everything we buy is generic as I look at the cost and I just can't justify spending it. (we have 7 kids at home and it adds up) If I am lucky enough to win, I would love the 'Clean Just About Anything for Next to Nothing book' please :)

I have bought hair dye rather than pay a hairdresser to do my hair for me to save dollars. I have bought generic brands of products. I have also changed our meat to mince, sausages and chicken drumsticks. Feeding my family for $75 per week would really come in handy at the present!

I only get a hair cut 1-2 a year, I don't buy any skin products, we don't go away very often and usually only to my parents house, we buy second hand clothes for the most part and don't have any money for date nights, I shop at Aldi and look for discounts... but I don't mind, I love our family and know that one day things won't be as tough!

The thing that I have gone with out it is birthdays, We celebrate the kids birthdays and they get a gift but we can normally only afford about $60 each. Hubby and I forego birthdays, I think the last time we did pressents was 2005! I would love either the feed your family for $75 or cleaning next to nothing

But we do have eachother! (would love the feed your family for $75)

Feed Your Family for $75 a week was made for our family at the moment. My husband has recently had a nervous breakdown and the government can only help so much, if I knew how to budget our meals wisely it would go a very long way!

I would love FEED YOURSELF FOR $35 A WEEK thank you. I have had to go without 'delicious' soap. I make do with the cheap, no name soap. I miss smelling like a Parisian Spring morning. Tip of the iceberg really.

I'm always told I use too many cleaning chemicals at home... I've started to limit them to save money as there so expensive. I'd LOVE the cleaning on a budget book so I can aim to cut out even more cleaning products from the shopping

We originally had a budget of $15,000 for our wedding. But when a few health issues came up, we had to put our budget down to $5000. Which isnt alot whenever you mention 'Wedding'. With a call out to friends and family we managed to get alot of things that would cost $$$ for minimal/free. I managed to win a $50 voucher from the lady who was doing our wedding cupcakes I got a friend to make my dress, garter and hair piece (material from Spotlight end of year sale) A friend did my hair who is a hairdresser A family friend did my makeup I borrowed perfume off my sister I borrowed parasols off my friend who had used them at her wedding last year We got a friend to drive us to the wedding in his 1974 mustang My sister was our photographer We made our own invitations and table placements cards Bought our own table decorations And kept everything simple. We also kept numbers to 40. 20 immediate family and 20 friends. I would love to win the feed your family on $75 book!

We've had to replace alot of the brand-named grocery products for generic branded ones. Also, we now have family nights at home, watching dvds or playing board games, as opposed to going bowling or to the movies.Alot of other things but need to keep within 50 words :)

My youngest son is off to the Army… So all on my lonesome. I’d love to win the feed yourself book. Learning how to cook for 1 person will be a struggle especially when you are used to cooking for the family. I’d like to pay of the mortgage sooner so have been going without lots of those goodies I’d usually have in the house fo rthe kids.

When I suddenly found myself a single parent with three pre teen boys and an ex who refused to pay child support we found things really tight. I managed to feed my kids with help from the salvos and the food bank and by going without meat and fish for around 6 years. I would buy for the boys but not for me. It took me several months to get used to eating beef and lamb again when things got a bit better. Lol. I also stopped buying clothes, going out, all luxuries and junk food, but we all survived and I now have 3 wonderful and responsible adult sons and 2 beautiful grandchildren. So all is good in my world :) If it is my lucky day - Any book would be fine.

As a mum of 3 I have had to learn to budget to make ends meet. Buying in bulk helps over time, as does paying weekly amounts off the household bills. Op shopping or clothes swapping with friends is a great way to save on clothing! Unfortunately being thrifty isn't enough, I ask for a voucher to the hairdresser for birthday & christmas presents & I havn't bought makeup in ages. I don't mind tho, as long as my children are happy & healthy, that's what's important!
